Arthritis


Arthritis refers to a group of rheumatologic diseases that cause of pain, swelling and stiffness. They sometimes show a severe involvement and may affect internal organs.

How many types of joint rheumatisms are available? There are over 200 distinct rheumatic diseases. Most of the rheumatic diseases in childhood are categorized under the arthritis group. The most common form of inflammatory arthritis in adults is rheumatoid arthritis (RA). RA may lead to physical disability if not followed regularly and treated.

How are they diagnosed? As is true for all the diseases, examination by a physician is essential. Blood tests and imaging tests can provide beneficial information both in diagnosis and disease management.

Can arthritis be treated? They can be treated. They can be stopped or treated completely with an accurate diagnosis and a planned treatment. Each arthritis requires different treatments. While one medication works well with one type, another medication would be beneficial for another type of arthritis. Physical therapy is sometimes applied with some medications.

Rheumatoid arthritis. As the most common type of arthritis, primarily two types of medications are used. (1) Medications that only eliminate the symptoms. These are the medications resembling aspirin. (2) Basic medications. These are the medications that stops the prognosis of the disease or treat completely. These are medications such as methotrexate, sulfasalazine, leflunomide, hydroxychloroquine and biological agents (etanercept, infliximab etc.).

Ankylosing spondylitis. It is a type of inflammatory rheumatism which is more prevalent in men. It usually starts with back pain. Medications similar to those for rheumatoid arthritis are used. Physical therapy occupies an important place for the treatment of ankylosing spondylitis.

Is thermal spring good for the arthritis? Generally, it isn’t good. At thermal spring water, arthritis exacerbates. In some periods and some types, thermal spring, sand bath and mud bath can be applied under the control of a physician.

Is ozone therapy used for arthritis? Medical ozone therapy proven treatments are very effective in treating inflammation, free radicals and other core issues that arthritis patients deal with. As a supportive therapy, it can be administered through blood and into the painful and swollen joints.
