Stroke is caused by a blockage or bleeding in the blood vessels in the brain. Its incidence increases with age and diseases such as hypertension and diabetes. Depending on the affected side of the brain, paralysis develops in the right or left half of the body. The shape of the picture depends on the number of brain nerves affected and the function of the nerves.


Stroke can sometimes be life-threatening, but it is also possible to return to normal life after a stroke. Treatment and rehabilitation are required to return to normal life. Because nerve cells are different from other cells of the body. When they are damaged, the survivors cannot reproduce and form new nerve cells, but it is possible to regain their functions. This recovery is possible with the reorganization of the communication network between healthy nerves, that is, with neural plasticity. The first 6 months are critical in the healing process of the nerves. The goal of post-stroke treatment is to help the patient become independent or less dependent.


Stroke rehabilitation is multifaceted. Weakness, imbalance, stiffness in muscles and joints, sore shoulder, speech-swallowing disorders, depression are frequently seen in patients. Treatment is also teamwork. Exercises are performed by physiotherapists under the supervision of a doctor, electrotherapy sessions in which current frequency and type are specially adjusted, occupational treatments for daily activities, exercise programs in the pool, speech therapy by a speech therapist, and robotic rehabilitation with the development of technology.


Physiotherapists work on preventing stiffness in the joints, strengthening the arm and leg muscles, and sitting independently, standing balanced, stepping, walking, and climbing stairs, respectively, with a personalized exercise program. In robot treatment, which is one of the highest possibilities of technology, the patient is walked very close to the normal walking style, and signals of the normal walking style are created in the brain. Post-stroke patients' legs recover faster and better than their hands. More intense and comfortable rehabilitation can be done with robotic rehabilitation for the hand and arm, which have more complex tasks than the legs. The buoyancy of water is used in pool therapy. The labor force falling on the patient's muscles is reduced and the exercises are done much more comfortably in the water. Speech therapist works on vocalization, speech and swallowing with patients with impaired swallowing.
